CI HUB Connector for Wordpress: Alt Text Mapping

Alt text (alternative text) is an important part of web accessibility. Screen readers use alt text to describe images to visually impaired users, allowing them to understand the content of an image.

Ideally, alt text should already be prepared by the editorial team and stored as metadata with the asset. When images are added to WordPress, this text can be assigned to the image’s Alt Text field.

However, manually adding alt text for many assets can take time. The Alt Text Mapping feature in the CI HUB Connector for WordPress helps automate this process by mapping a metadata field from your source system directly to the WordPress alt text field.

Enable Alt Text Mapping

To activate the feature:

  1. In the WordPress backend, go to Media.

  2. Open the CI HUB Connector.

  3. Click the hamburger menu in the top-right corner to open Settings.

  4. At the bottom of the settings page, enable the checkbox “Enable alt text mapping for the metadata key.”

  5. Enter the name of the metadata field you want to map in the text field that appears.

How to Find the Metadata Key

You can find the metadata key either in your source system or in an asset already uploaded to the WordPress media library using the CI HUB Connector.

  1. Open an image in the WordPress Media Library.

  2. In the information panel on the right, scroll down to the CI HUB Connector custom fields.

  3. Locate the metadata field you want to use (for example, caption).

  4. Copy the field name after com_ci_hub_.

Example:
com_ci_hub_caption → use caption as the metadata key.

Enter this value in the Alt Text Mapping setting.

Result

Once the mapping is configured, any asset placed on a WordPress page through the CI HUB Connector will automatically populate the WordPress Alt Text field with the mapped metadata value.
